A Brief History of Decatur GA

Before European settlement, the area that is now Decatur was mostly an old growth forest and the point where two Native American trails crossed.

The city of Decatur was incorporated on December 10, 1823. It was named for United States Navy Commodore Stephen Decatur. During the Civil War, the city was occupied in attempts to cut off the Confederates supply line coming in from Augusta.

In the late 1900’s the metropolitan area of Atlanta eventually spread into DeKalb County leading to a fluctuation of property prices. After several impressive efforts to rebuild the area, Decatur has established itself as a progressive city with great community involvement.
