A Brief History of Alpharetta GA

Prior to the Indian Removal Act, the land that is now Alpharetta, GA was occupied by the Cherokee tribe. The vacant land attracted new settlers who set up at the New Prospect Camp Ground near modern downtown Alpharetta. This spot would later come to be a trading post.

Before 1858, Alpharetta was known as Milton. The city chartered in December of that year and went on to serve as county seat of Milton County, Georgia through 1931. At this time, Milton and Fulton counties merged to avoid financial peril during the Great Depression.

Today, the Simeon and Jane Rucker Log House is included on the Nation Register of Historic Places.
